About

La Casona Bottles in SummerLa Casona are easy to recognize – they’re the big wines with the little house. This range of wines comes from a little known area in Spain about 4 hours southwest of Madrid called Yecla. It is here that a rugged mountainous terrain and extreme arid climate conspire to produce some of the world’s most exciting and delicious wines.

La Casona wines are made by the Castano family, who have pioneered the production of rich, ripe, modern and stylish wines from an ancient local grape variety called Monastrell. While this grape has been a secret only to those most in the know for centuries, Monastrell vines slowly made their way north into France, where winemakers immediately saw the potential of this undiscovered variety. Today, Monastrell is used in some of the most prestigious French wines in places like the Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape.

So with these deep roots (both literally and figuratively) in the mountains of Spain, the Castano family set out to produce the world’s single greatest wine bargain – a wine so delicious it would excite the palates of the pickiest critics, while offering a price so low that we could all make the wine with the little house, our house wine!

Picking GrapesIt all started with deep roots. La Casona Monastrell is hand harvested from vineyards ranging in age from 40 to 60 years old! These gnarly old vines yield tiny amounts of rich, ripe and complex juice, which in turns allows for wines that typically sell for 10 times the price of this humble $9 wine.

And so, as a few cases of La Casona Monastrell began their long voyage across the Atlantic destined for Canada. No one could have possibly anticipated what was to happen next.

Experts, judges, critics, sommeliers and wine lovers got their first peak at this new wine and the consensus was clear – La Casona Monastrell was something very special. Behind the simple label depicting the little house and underneath each screwtop closure was the rarest of all wines – authentic, complex, delicious, and food friendly, all at an absurdly low price.

And so the La Casona craze began… experts published reviews in newspapers and famous wine magazines across North America. Wine drinkers fell in love at first sip. Long line-ups at LCBO shops began to form as this rising star sold out at an amazing rate.

The wine with the little house on the label had become a huge hit.
