A Game-Changing Wine
Easy to recognize, easier to drink, but impossible to replicate…
La Casona Monastrell is the big wine with the little house on the label.
La Casona comes from a little known area in Spain about 4 hours southwest of Madrid called Yecla. It is here that generations of family know-how, a rugged mountainous terrain and an extreme arid climate conspire to produce one of the world’s most exciting and delicious wines.
The moment that experts, judges, critics, sommeliers and wine lovers got their first peak at this new wine, the consensus was clear. Behind the simple label depicting a little house and underneath each screwtop closure was the rarest of all wines – authentic, complex, delicious, and food friendly, all at an absurdly low price.
La Casona wines are made by the Castano family, who have pioneered the production of rich, ripe,
modern and stylish wines from an ancient local grape variety called Monastrell.
Over many centuries, Monastrell vines slowly made their way north into France, where winemakers immediately saw the potential of this undiscovered variety. Today, Monastrell is used in some of the most prestigious French wines in places like the Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape.
And why can’t this extraordinary wine be replicated?
It all starts with deep roots. La Casona Monastrell is hand harvested from vineyards ranging in age from 40 to 60 years old! These gnarly old vines yield tiny amounts of rich, ripe and complex juice, which in turns allows for wines that typically sell for 10 times the price of this humble $9 wine. Combine these superior raw materials with the generational know-how of the Castano family, and you have a recipe for a spectacular wine that simply cannot be matched.
La Casona's Old Vines Monastrell scored an 89 with world-renowned wine critic, Robert Parker.
